The most important questions about filter coffee
What is filter coffee?
Filter coffee is a beverage where hot water passes through ground coffee without pressure. A paper, metal, or cloth filter retains the powder, while the water flows downward driven only by the force of gravity. Thanks to this process, the final drink is particularly clear and rich in nuances. This method best highlights the most delicate aromas, such as fruity, nutty, or chocolate notes.
What is the best coffee for filter?
Which coffee is best for filter depends entirely on your personal taste. If you prefer a light and fruity aroma, a light roast from Ethiopia or Kenya is an excellent option. If instead you are looking for an intense, chocolatey flavor with low acidity, a medium roast from Brazil or a balanced coffee blend will better suit your needs.
Is filter coffee healthier?
Yes, several studies indicate that coffee prepared with this method is very digestible. The credit goes to the paper filter, which retains certain coffee oils that could otherwise affect cholesterol levels. Furthermore, this type of preparation is considered particularly gentle on the stomach and preserves valuable antioxidants.
How many spoons of coffee are needed for a cup?
As a guideline for a normal cup (about 125 ml to 150 ml), a level tablespoon of ground coffee is ideal to obtain a balanced result. This corresponds to about 7-8 grams of coffee. If you prefer a more intense drink, you can slightly increase the amount.
Filter coffee: how is it made?
Manual preparation with a drip filter (V60 or similar) is done in a few simple steps:
- Insert the filter paper into the holder and rinse it with hot water to neutralize the paper taste.
- Pour the ground coffee and level it slightly.
- Initially pour a little hot water (about 92–94 °C) until the powder is completely moistened and wait 30 seconds.
- Slowly pour the remaining water with regular, circular movements.
Which grind size to choose for filter coffee?
The correct grind size for this preparation is medium. Filter coffee should have a consistency similar to fine sand or table salt. If the grind is too fine, the contact time lengthens and the coffee will taste bitter. If it is too coarse, the water will flow away too quickly, leaving a watery taste.
How do you prepare coffee with a filter?
Today, to prepare coffee with a filter, a classic electric machine or the manual method (pour-over) is usually used. In both cases, the temperature of the water is fundamental: it must not be in a full boil. Temperatures that are too high destroy the delicate aromas and extract unwanted bitter substances.
How many grams of coffee are needed for 1 liter of water?
If you wish to prepare an entire one-liter carafe, there is a proven proportion: use exactly 60 grams of ground coffee for 1 liter of water. With this dosage, you will obtain an optimal balance between body and aromatic richness.
Why is most supermarket filter coffee not good?
Many people buy a product at the supermarket attracted by the words "excellent coffee," but then they are disappointed. The coffee often has a bitter or simply flat taste. This happens because commercial coffee is roasted too quickly and at temperatures that are too high. Furthermore, the powder often sits for months on shelves, losing all its freshness. Anyone looking for true pleasure quickly realizes that ordinary coffee is not enough.
In addition, small packages run out quickly in everyday life. This forces you to continuously buy or order, making you lose precious time without guaranteeing the quality you desire in your cup.
How does EQ Coffee solve this problem?
We believe that everyone deserves to drink exceptional coffee. For this reason, we only collaborate with small artisanal roasteries that deeply know their craft. The coffee beans are heated slowly and gently in a drum roaster. In this way, unpleasant acidities vanish, while the delicious and natural hints of the countries of origin are preserved.
Furthermore, you will receive all coffees in practical and long-lasting 1kg packages. This ensures you always have a sufficient stock of fresh beans at home.

Frequently asked questions about filter coffee
Why is my filter coffee sour?
A taste that is too sour usually derives from a so-called under-extraction. This means that the aromas have not been optimally extracted from the powder. The most common causes are a grind that is too coarse, a contact time with water that is too short, or a water temperature that is too low (below 90 °C). It should also be considered that beans with a very light roast naturally possess a more pronounced fruity acidity.
How is filter coffee best stored to protect its aroma?
Beans and ground coffee must be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and preferably vacuum-packed or sealed. The ideal is to leave the coffee in its original packaging equipped with a freshness valve, closing it tightly with a clip. The package can then be stored in an opaque jar. It is not recommended to store it in the refrigerator, as humidity and odors from other foods can ruin its aromatic profile.
Does filter coffee contain more caffeine than an espresso?
Yes, if we consider the typical cup in which it is served. A cup of filter coffee (about 200 ml) contains about 80-120 mg of caffeine, a quantity significantly higher than a cup of espresso (about 30 ml), which contains about 60-80 mg. Although the concentration of caffeine per milliliter is higher in espresso, the larger amount of water and the longer contact time in filter coffee extract more caffeine overall.
Which water is best for preparing filter coffee?
For an optimal taste, the ideal is fresh water, rich in oxygen, with a medium hardness (about 5° - 8° dH) and a pH value around 7.0. If the water is too hard (calcareous), it neutralizes the delicate fruity acidities and the coffee will taste flat. If the water is too soft, the coffee could taste unpleasantly sour or bitter. In case of hard tap water, the use of a filter jug is recommended.
What is the difference between Single Origin and Blend in filter coffee?
A Single Origin is composed of 100% beans coming from a single geographical region or even from a single plantation. It enhances the authentic and characteristic taste of the soil and climate of origin. A Blend is instead a designed mixture of different coffee varieties. The goal of the blend is to create a particularly balanced, harmonious, and constant aromatic profile throughout the year.
How do you properly clean a classic filter coffee machine?
For regular cleaning, all removable parts like the glass carafe and the filter holder must be washed after each use with hot water and a mild soap. To remove limescale deposits inside the machine, the appliance should be descaled every 1-3 months with a specific liquid descaler based on citric acid. Vinegar is not suitable because it risks corroding the internal seals.
Which filter paper is better: bleached or unbleached?
Bleached (white) filter paper is usually preferred by experts because it is completely neutral in flavor. Unbleached (brown) paper often has a slight woody hint that can transfer into the cup. If you use unbleached filters, we recommend rinsing them very well with hot water before inserting the coffee to minimize this aftertaste.
Can a filter coffee be prepared using espresso beans?
Technically it is possible, but from a taste point of view, it is not ideal. Espresso beans undergo a significantly darker and longer roast than those intended for filter. Consequently, they present many bitter notes and very little fruity acidity. Using them in the filter, the result will often be very smoky, bitter, and heavy, losing the clarity and fineness typical of a good filter coffee.
How long does filter coffee stay fresh once extracted into the carafe?
The extracted coffee should be consumed within 30 minutes of preparation. If it is left to heat for too long on an electric plate or inside a thermos, the coffee oxidizes. This alters the acids present, the aromas evaporate, and the drink quickly takes on a bitter and old taste.
Why is the Blooming phase so important in manual filter?
During Blooming (also called pre-infusion), the coffee powder is moistened with a little hot water and left to rest for about 30 seconds. In this phase, the carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) trapped in the beans during roasting escapes. By eliminating this gas, the water can subsequently extract the precious aromas much more evenly and effectively.
What to pay attention to when wanting to buy high-quality filter coffee?
When you buy high-quality coffee, you should especially check the roasting date, origin, and roasting method. An excellent coffee indicates the specific country or plantation (Single Origin) and is artisanally processed in a drum roaster. Furthermore, the ideal would be to buy it in whole beans or have it freshly ground just before shipping to preserve its aroma intact.
Why does Premium filter coffee cost more than supermarket coffee?
The difference in price lies in the entire value chain. Premium coffee comes from sustainable crops, often harvested by hand, where farmers receive fair compensation. Furthermore, the beans are roasted in small batches with the traditional drum method, slowly, for up to 20 minutes. Industrial coffee, on the contrary, is processed with hot air at very high temperatures in just a few minutes, at the expense of taste and digestibility.
In what formats is it convenient to buy filter coffee online?
The ideal package size depends on weekly consumption. For those who drink it occasionally, 250-gram bags are perfect for consuming the product fresh within one or two weeks. For offices, families, or regular consumers, buying in the 1kg format is convenient and practical, provided that the coffee is consumed within 4-6 weeks.
How do you recognize freshness when buying filter coffee online?
True freshness in online purchases is recognized by the transparency of the roasting date indicated on the package, which ideally should not date back more than a few weeks or months. Furthermore, high-quality bags are equipped with an aroma valve. This valve allows gases to escape from the bag but prevents oxygen from entering, thus avoiding the beans from oxidizing.
How much does a high-quality filter coffee cost?
Prices for a Premium filter coffee in a 1kg package vary based on the exclusivity of the green beans, the origin, and the individual artisanal roastery. A kilogram of artisanally roasted coffee usually stands between €29.00 and €99.99. While harmonious mixtures (Blends) for daily consumption are placed in the most affordable price range, rare single-origin varieties (Single Origins) coming from micro-lots or exclusive regions are positioned in the highest price segment.
Looking for smaller bags?
You can build your own box with a variety of coffees from your selected roaster.
